An explanation of removal of buried sutures

Removal of buried sutures is a procedure to remove the buried threads that form the double eyelid when the double eyelid line is not as desired, when the line needs to be changed, when the knot is noticeable and bothersome, or when the eyes feel rougher and more foreign.

A needle hole is made in the skin directly above the knot, and the knot is removed using a loupe and microsurgical instruments.
This is expected to result in the disappearance of the formed double eyelid.
If the stitches are removed shortly after the buried suture method of double eyelid surgery, rapid disappearance of swelling is also expected.

Features of our removal of buried sutures

  • For local anesthesia, we use 34G ultra-fine needles (needle thickness 0.2mm) to minimize pain.
  • Surface anesthesia and intravenous anesthesia are used for those who are afraid of even the slightest pain.
  • We remove threads from minimal needle holes using a loupe.
  • The day after surgery, you can shower, wash your face, and apply make-up except for on your eyelids.

Procedure details

Using a loupe, the internal thread is removed through a minimal needle hole along the double eyelid line or just above the knot.
The threads are removed using a special instrument used in microsurgery.

Stitches may be difficult to remove if the threads are brittle or have become depigmented and clear after sutures have been buried for a long time.
Even after all the threads are removed, the line may not return to normal.

If time has passed, the line may still take some time to disappear.
In rare cases, the line may remain after the thread is removed.

How do you protect the eyes during sugery?

At our clinic, we administer eye drop anesthesia and use a corneal protection plate during surgery.
The plate completely separates the eyeball from the eyelid, so there is no damage to the eyeball.

How do you manage pain during surgery?

Pain will be minimal because our local anesthetic contains extra agents to reduce any discomfort.
To minimize injection pain, the amount of anesthetic used is kept to a minimum of 1-1.5 cc for both eyelids.
Pain is also minimized by using an ultra-fine 34G needle, as well as a new needle for each eyelid, and by administering the local anesthetic very slowly.
For those who are still afraid of pain, we offer intravenous anesthesia, where you will be unconscious and breathing as usual.
